Progress report, in upgrading ez2view for IESS

On Tuesday 9th January we shared the note ‘Preparing ez2view for IESS (IRP and BDU), which goes live Monday 3rd June 2024’.  Since that time, we’ve continued the process of enhancing ez2view (including for the IESS changes in June).

Recently we’ve fielded some customer questions (e.g. GR Case 00006672) with respect to ez2view upgrades and the release of the EMMS v5.3 schema into AEMO Production Systems that occurs Wednesday 10th April 2024 … which is in 7 days time.

So we thought it would be worth recapping the key timeline, and updating where we are at:

Key Dates to remember

Breaking down this market change, it separates into a change for the EMMS data model, and a later change to the Market Rules/Operation, as follows:

Date When What?

DATE 1

Wednesday 10th April 2024, as noted earlier.

… when the EMMS v5.3 schema goes into production

We’re expecting that different clients will make different decisions about when they upgrade their own Internal EMMS.  This note will help match this decision with what’s recommended from an ez2view perspective.

For instance, we’re updating our own copies of the EMMS (and those we host on behalf of our clients) this week.

DATE 2

Monday 3rd June 2024, as noted earlier.

… when the IESS Rule Change comes into effect

(though note DATE 3)

DATE 3

Sometime around 3rd June 2024

This date is less certain, but more important from an ez2view perspective.

It is the date on which the first BDU will become live in the EMMS (either in dispatch, or in predispatch).  Based on past experience with these sorts of changes:

(a)  This might be shortly before Monday 3rd June 2024 (in predispatch)

(b)  This might be on Monday 3rd June 2024; or

(c)  This might be sometime after 3rd June, depending when AEMO makes the registration changes.

Now that we have these dates in mind, let’s look at the impact these changes will have on the various versions of ez2view.

With respect to various ez2view versions

We’ve done a quick scan this week of ez2view versions in use across our client base (remembering that we switched off all versions older than v9.8.* on Monday 4th December 2024).

Remember that you can find the current version you are using in the top-right of each Window:

We’ve created the following table that you might scan to find your version, and understand the implications of that version with respect to the three key IESS dates:

Version of ez2view DATE 1

(Wed 10th April 2024)

DATE 2

(Mon 3rd June 2024)

DATE 3

(on, or around, 3rd June)

There are a number of versions still in use across our client base that are below what’s noted as the ‘minimum supported version’ on the Installer Downloads page today.

From our scan of usage stats in recent times, some common versions are the following:

v9.8.1.37 … released 6th Oct 2023
v9.8.1.45 … released 11th Oct 2023
v9.8.3.8 … released 16th Oct 2023
v9.8.3.10 … released 19th Oct 2023
v9.8.5.8 … released 3rd Nov 2023

These versions have not been tested against an EMMS v5.3 schema database.

Whilst we are not directly aware of anything in the new Schema that would cause this version to fail, we would not recommend upgrading the Schema until you are using a more recent version of ez2view.

Note that all of these versions contain a known bug relating to FCAS bids that was fixed from v9.8.5.28.

See DATE 3 for when changes will impact on ez2view

From this point we are certain that situations will arise where this version does not show a correct view of this enhanced market.

v9.8.5.127

which is (today) listed here as ‘Slow Channel’.

This version has been tested against an EMMS v5.3 schema database, but only one running on MS SQL (not Oracle).

See DATE 3 for when changes will impact on ez2view

From this point we are certain that situations will arise where this version does not show a correct view of this enhanced market.

v9.9.1.98

which is (today) listed here as ‘Latest and Greatest’.

Note that this version was released (at least in part) to correct a bug we’d become aware of on 13th Feb 2024 with CPD Price during OCD periods.

This version has been tested against an EMMS v5.3 schema database:
• Running on MS SQL; but also
• Running on Oracle.

Hence if you wished to upgrade your EMMS (in Oracle) to v5.3, we would recommend you upgrade to this version first.

See DATE 3 for when changes will impact on ez2view

From this point we are certain that situations will arise where this version does not show a correct view of this enhanced market.  Fewer circumstances than the versions above.

We have been, with v9.* releases, progressively working through the IESS changes to reduce the surface area of the incompatibilities, but this has not yet been completed.

Fully IESS-compatible Version

this will be released as ASAP, and before 3rd June 2024 (when we are completed with the migration process).,/p>

When completed, this version will be listed on the Downloads Page, and with another Release Note here.

This will work with EMMS v5.3.

This version is being built to be compatible with the IESS Market Changes, whenever they actually first hit the EMMS.
